What is Trespa?

Trespa is a type of High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) made by the Dutch fiberboard manufacturer Trespa. These Trespa boards are composed of wood fibers, paper, and thermosetting resin, which are compressed under high pressure. On both sides, they are coated with a hard, impervious EBC top layer.

The compressed layers contain natural fibers impregnated with phenolic resin. This high-pressure compression creates a very strong core. Due to the high pressure and temperature during compression, these solid plastic boards are extremely weather-resistant, very strong, and difficult to stain. As a result, Trespa is widely used in construction for dormer windows, facade cladding, roof edges, and soffits.

Saw blade for HPL (Volkern)

A circular saw blade for Trespa, HPL, and melamine typically has a trapezoidal flat tooth or alternate tooth design, ensuring a clean, splinter-free cut. A saw blade suitable for cutting Trespa is resistant to high temperatures. Since Trespa is a dense, solid material, high temperatures and heat are generated during the cutting process. It's also essential to ensure that the saw blade remains sufficiently cooled while cutting.

Cutting Trespa: How to saw HPL?

Cutting Trespa is not particularly difficult if you use the right tools. It's comparable to cutting hardwood, but cutting Trespa with a regular wood saw is challenging, so always use a saw blade specifically designed for HPL and Trespa. These blades are specially developed to cut Trespa sheets without problems.

For cutting a Trespa or HPL sheet, a circular saw is the best tool. It’s advised not to use a hand saw for cutting HPL sheets.

For the cutting depth, it's recommended to take three to four times the thickness of the sheet. Make sure to insert the saw blade into the material at the back of the Trespa sheet. Use a medium cutting speed and let the saw do the work. Cut the HPL sheet at a medium to high RPM to smoothly cut through the solid plastic, and ensure that the base of the saw blade always lies flat against the sheet
